For Nurse Practitioners · Canada

Can a Nurse Practitioner be a Medical Director?

Yes. A Nurse Practitioner can be the Medical Director for a med spa or a nurse-led injectables practice in most of Canada, because an NP is an authorized prescriber: able to assess a client, prescribe, and issue the order a nurse needs to inject. In Manitoba an NP is the route for a remote arrangement. A Registered Nurse cannot hold the role.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. We checked each province's college standards in August 2026. NP scope and prescribing standards are set province by province and they change. Confirm with your own college before you take on a practice.

Why an NP can do this and an RN cannot

Medical direction rests on prescribing authority. A neuromodulator is a prescription drug, so someone who is allowed to prescribe has to assess the client and write the order. NPs have that authority within their scope. RNs and practical nurses do not, which is why they need a director in the first place.

What the work is

The same as for a physician: assess each client, issue a client-specific order, keep the practice's protocols current, review charts, and be reachable for complications. You should also be satisfied with the training of every nurse you issue orders for. The full list is in what a Medical Director does.

Where NPs are needed most right now

Manitoba and Alberta. Practices in Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton are asking us for introductions and we have fewer directors there than requests. In Manitoba the shortage is specifically NPs. See Manitoba and Alberta.

Before you say yes to a practice

Check that aesthetics is within your own competence and that your registration is in the province where the clients are treated. Then ask the practice the hard questions. We wrote them down: ten questions to ask before you agree to direct a practice.

Questions Nurse Practitioners ask

Can a Nurse Practitioner be a Medical Director in Canada?

Yes, in most provinces. A Nurse Practitioner is an authorized prescriber, so an NP can assess clients, issue client-specific orders and provide the oversight a nurse-led aesthetic practice needs.

Can a nurse be a Medical Director?

A Nurse Practitioner can. A Registered Nurse or practical nurse cannot, because the role depends on being able to prescribe.

Does an NP need a physician to oversee injectors?

In the provinces where an NP can be the authorizing prescriber, the NP provides the oversight within their own scope. Whether a specific treatment is within your scope and competence is for you and your college.

Can an NP be a Medical Director for a practice in another city?

In provinces that allow a remote prescriber, yes, as long as you are registered in the province where the clients are treated and every client is genuinely assessed. British Columbia and Quebec require the prescriber on-site.

Where are NP Medical Directors needed most?

Manitoba and Alberta. In Manitoba an NP is the route for a remote arrangement, and practices in Winnipeg are waiting. Calgary and Edmonton have more requests than directors.
